Just in time for spring and summer fun, a group of technology students at William Floyd High School and Floyd Academy produced some sharp-looking cornhole boards at school.
The students — all learning this year in classes taught by Joseph Brand and Frederick Luhr — teamed up to create, design and finish six sets of cornhole boards for a Town of Brookhaven cornhole league.
Learning basic carpentry, design and finishing skills along the way, students created the pieces from start to finish. They also learned how use a vinyl cutter to make high-quality logos and paint and polyurethane the sets.
TJ’s Hero Shop in Mastic donated the material for the project, the district said. The shop is a sponsor of the town’s cornhole league.
Cornhole, a backyard lawn game involving players taking turns throwing 16-ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised platform with a hole in the far end, continues to grow in popularity. National tournaments are featured on ESPN.
TruGreen is even offering $1,000 to the avid cornhole player who can best describe how they are using the game to stay connected while staying safe during the pandemic.
“Looking for ways to have fun while socially distanting? Want something to do that’s good for all ages?” the lawn care company says on its website. “If you are, then we have the job for you. We’re paying someone $1,000 to play cornhole.”
