It’s a story with a happy ending — at least for the dog.
A Wyandanch woman has been charged with animal cruelty and resisting arrest — and may face additional charges after injuring an SPCA detective during her arrest, authorities said.
Suffolk County SPCA detectives charged Jasmine Petro, 37, on Thursday with two misdemeanor charges. A felony assault charge is also being considered after a detective was hurt while trying to take her into custody, and later treated at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
Investigators said the case dates back to July 11, when Petro’s dog — a pit bull named Yeezy — was found emaciated at her Wyandanch home. Before she was arrested, Petro voluntarily surrendered the animal to the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter, where veterinarians worked to restore the dog’s health.
Yeezy eventually gained weight and has since been adopted.
Petro was booked at the Suffolk Police First Precinct and released with a desk appearance ticket. She is due back in First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 8.
The SPCA urged the public to report any suspected animal cruelty or neglect by calling 631.382.7722.
