Southside Hospital has just announced the purchase of a $2.5 million surgical robot.
The da Vinci Xi Surgical System and its laser targeting will be utilized for minimally invasive cardiac, thoracic, gynecologic, urologic, surgical oncology and general surgery.
Southside’s Xi replaces the older Si model in Bay Shore, said a Northwell Health spokeswoman. There are 16 da Vinci robots in the health system; nine of them are the new Xi’s.
Hospital officials describe laser targeting as “a layer of technological assistance that helps the surgeon pinpoint the incision site.
“The system provides three-dimensional, high-definition views of the patient. The device’s arm even has a greater range of motion than any human, allowing for better access to the surgical site.”
“Southside Hospital has some of the best robotic surgeons in the area,” Southside’s executive director, Donna Moravick, said in a statement. “We will take any opportunity we can to provide these top-notch surgeons with the best technology.”
Hospital officials said such investments have helped Southside Hospital achieve its Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery designation last year from the Surgical Review Corporation.
