More than 200 members of the Suffolk County Police Department got together to raise awareness of the high suicide rate — estimated at 22 per day — among United States military veterans.
The police officers and recruits, as well as police commissioner Timothy Sini, got together on Oct. 26 to simultaneously participate in the #22PushUpChallenge.
The police joined on the grass at the county’s police academy in Brentwood and formed the number 22, with an underline, while doing 22 pushups.
Suffolk County police released photos from the event on Friday, Veterans Day.
The Suffolk County Police department accepted the challenge from the Nassau County Police Department and has now nominated the FBI to participate.
“As a police department that employs many veterans, the Suffolk County Police Department supports and cares deeply about all active and former service members of our nation’s armed forces,” Sini said.
“Veteran suicide is a national tragedy and we are proud to participate in the #22PushUpChallenge to raise awareness of this critical issue.”
