More than 800 donations have flowed in for the daughters and widow of Spencer Korwin
The wife and children of Spencer Korwin, the former Team USA triathlete who drowned during a family vacation on Shelter Island, have received an outpouring of financial support, with a GoFundMe campaign raising nearly $380,000.
The fundraiser, In Memory of Spencer Korwin, has drawn more than 800 donations since its Sept. 4 launch.
“He was the sun around which so many of our lives orbited,” the organizers wrote on the campaign page, describing Korwin as a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend whose loss is deeply affecting “everyone who knew and loved him.”
Organized by Josh Grosbard, David Himmel and Jeffrey Witten, the GoFundMe effort has received contributions from across the country — one anonymous donor gave $38,000.
For givers considering a larger, multi-year pledge, the organizers included an email address to reach the family directly to coordinate: [email protected]
The gifts will go toward a fund for the future education of Korwin’s two daughters, Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1. Organizers wrote that it was their hope that the fund will show the girls how loved their father was and how much support surrounded their family.
Korwin, 38, of Manhattan, was a 2010 Syracuse University graduate who founded Korwin Health & Wellness and competed for Team USA at the 2012 Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
He drowned Sept. 2 after entering the water about 8 a.m. near the Pridwin Hotel’s private dock on Shelter Island. Authorities found his body about seven hours later.
Shelter Island Police have said the death appears accidental, with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office still determining official cause.
