Lindenhurst mom, 28, dies after childbirth, sparking outpouring of support

|

The Long Island community is wrapping its arms around the family of a Lindenhurst mother who died from catastrophic complications shortly after giving birth last month.

More than 200 donors have contributed over $11,000 to support the family of Leeanna Patto through a GoFundMe campaign established by family friends. The fundraiser aims to raise $30,000 to cover overwhelming medical expenses, childcare costs, and support for Patto’s two sons during an unimaginable tragedy.

Patto leaves behind a newborn baby boy and a 7-year-old son Jaxon.

“Our hearts are shattered as we ask for help for our beloved Leeanna and her family during the most devastating and unexpected time of their lives,” wrote the campaign’s organizers Cynthia Schmidt and Jenny Caselli.

Patto suffered a massive heart attack shortly after delivering her second child, due to serious pre-existing medical conditions. Doctors performed an emergency seven-hour surgery and placed a heart pump, but she subsequently suffered a stroke and remained in critical condition before passing away surrounded by loved ones.

Lives saved through organ donation

“Leeanna was a fighter in every sense of the word,” Schmidt wrote in an update announcing Patto’s death. “Through everything she endured, she showed strength, grace, and so much heart. In her final moments, she was at peace and felt no pain.”

In death, Patto served as an organ donor. The hospital honored her with a ceremonial “walk of honor” as she was escorted to the operating room.

“While our hearts are completely broken, Leeanna’s light did not go out with her passing,” Schmidt wrote, “Leeanna once said she ‘wanted everyone to have a piece of her,’ and through her selflessness, she will live on in the lives she helped save.”

“We are devastated by this loss, but we take comfort in knowing she was surrounded by love, felt no pain, and left this world knowing how deeply she was cherished,” Schmidt wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has prayed, reached out, donated, and shared kind words during this unimaginable time.”
