She advertised under a fake name, ran the operation on a quiet residential street — and managed to keep it going for 14 years before anyone called police.
Suffolk Police said they arrested an Islip Terrace woman on Monday for allegedly operating a brothel out of her home for more than a decade, authorities said.
Helen Mantell, 67, of 204 Cedarwood Street, was charged with prostitution after detectives from the Suffolk Police’s Human Trafficking Investigations Unit and Third Precinct officers investigated community complaints about the address.
Detectives uncovered online ads and message board posts indicating, they said, that Mantell had ran the operation since at least 2012, advertising her services under the name “Phyllis,” police said.

Mantell was arrested about 4:45 p.m. Monday and issued a desk appearance ticket. She is scheduled to be arraigned at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
Investigators said the probe is continuing but that there is currently no evidence of human trafficking.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Human Trafficking Investigations Unit at 631.854.7512.
