The Mastic-Moriches-Shirley Community Library is inviting the public to participate in a tour of the Tri-Hamlet area with the help of a new virtual map. The tour, open to all members of the community, features 25 celebrated and historical landmarks, as well as some that aren’t as well known.
Participants are able to explore these locations, such as the William Floyd Estate, Manor of St. George, Wertheim National Wildlife Preserve, the Floyd Murray Petty House, which sits next to the Bank of America on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, the Robinson Duck Farm Dog Park, via the map. Users can click on a site’s location and read about its history. Descriptions include addresses for places that are still around so that anyone can go and explore for themselves.
After each participant visits a site, they can tell a library staff member about their experience in order to be entered into a raffle.
The locations were chosen by Caroline Curtin, the program’s creator and a reference and adult services librarian. She said she drew inspiration from knowing that the community “has so many historic points of interest that our regular patrons walk or drive by every day.” She said she hopes they will explore on their own by simply using their phones.
Bradford Shupe, another librarian who is also a member of the Mastic Peninsula Historical Society, said he was “so happy [the project] was done.”
The program is running through Aug. 22.
