Long Island farm stands to visit right here on the South Shore

Let’s face it, the best way to buy natural and local is from a farm, where you can actually speak to the farmer.

And you don’t have to travel far.

Here are a handful of farm stand options on the South Shore.

Deer Run Farms

282 S Country Rd, Brookhaven

This farm stand on South Country Road has plenty of options for dinner, dessert or a tasty snack. They specialize in the leafy green stuff, such as basil, cilantro, parsley, dill, lettuce, kale, arugula, escarole, spinach — and they make their own pesto.

The produce for sale includes berries, radishes, rhubarb, zucchini and all colors of peppers; they even have purple.

Want to impress your hostess? Bring one of their fresh-baked pies, a hand-painted wine glass and a bunch of sunflowers.

You can get them all at Deer Run.

New this year is the “Farm to Jar” section that includes locally made mustards, jams, jellies, oils and dressings. There’s even pickled beets and a beer jelly made with local craft beer.

Other items include fresh mozzarella, a selection of goat cheese from Catapano Dairy Farm in Peconic, North Fork Potato Chips and Really Good Fruit Spread. (Yes, that’s the real name of it and they aren’t lying.)

Deer Run is open daily from 9 a.m.–6 p.m. in the summer and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays after Labor Day.
