Maryhaven Center of HopeĀ of Port Jefferson Station has offered programs for people with developmental disabilities for over a half-century.
However, yearly financial loses paired with a building in need of renovations has forced the school to wind down its Resident School Program.
āIt is a very difficult decision to close this important program that we have been running for more than 50 years, and we are heartbroken that we must do that,ā said Maryhaven President and CEO Lewis Grossman. āBut this action is the only fiscally responsible option to secure a strong and vital future for Maryhavenās many other needed programs.ā
According toĀ Catholic Health Services (CHS), which runs the school, Maryhaven experienced aĀ $1.7 million operating loss in 2018. And the facility, which was built in the 1930s, requires $10 million for upgrades.
