Mineola has been named among several major recipients of state money that’s headed to Long Island.
The village is getting $1.133 million to help fund upgrades to its Community Center, which officials said hasn’t been updated in 30 years.
The money is coming through the state’s Pro-Housing Communities Initiative, which delivers up to $650 million in discretionary funding each year to nearly 275 municipalities the state has certified as pro-housing.
“The Community Center is the central location where our many youth, senior, civic and other not for profit organizations hold their practices, meetings, classes and social events,” reads a village announcement. “The Village also hosts its summer camp and various community events like the annual Halloween and Holiday parties.”
Planned work for the center includes an HVAC replacement, major gymnasium and kitchen renovations, new windows and lighting, a boiler replacement “and other items,” the NYS website reads.
“These improvements will allow our residents and visitors new and old alike to have a safe, clean and modern center to enjoy,” village officials said.
“That’s great,” wrote Destinee Fiorillo on the village’s Facebook page, under the announcement.
“The community center has such potential and can be a great resource.”
While announcing the latest $123 million round of awards, Governor Kathy Hochul said that more housing is the “one solution to New York’s housing affordability crisis.”
“The Pro-Housing Communities initiative is delivering the incentives communities are looking for, and this latest round of grant funding will make a real difference in every region of New York,” she said on Jan. 28. “We’re proud of all the certified Pro-Housing Communities in New York and look forward to seeing their continued growth.”
