A 9-year-old boy suffered severe burns and went to the hospital in serious condition Wednesday after Suffolk Police officers rescued him from a burning Dix Hills home, authorities said.
The fire broke out at 284 Marlin St. about 5:05 p.m. A Dix Hills volunteer firefighter driving past spotted the injured boy’s mom, Nicole Heller, 39, unresponsive on the lawn and called 911.
When Suffolk cops arrived, they noticed smoke coming from the house and headed inside.
Officers Joshua Palas, Kevin Turner and Daniel Giustino — together with the volunteer firefighter — entered the home and used fire extinguishers to knock down the flames.
Officer Danielle Adames remained outside to assist the injured mother.
When the officers inside the home heard a child screaming upstairs, Palas pushed through heavy smoke to reach the second floor and found the boy, Jacob Heller, in an upstairs bathroom with severe burns.
Palas carried the boy outside, where first responders began treatment before he was taken in an ambulance to Stony Brook University lHospital, where he is listed in serious condition.
Nicole Heller was also taken to Stony Brook for treatment related to her medical emergency.
