Snow Shed, the Port Jefferson Station ski and snowboard shop that outfitted generations of Long Island winter sports enthusiasts, has closed after 44 years in business.
The shop announced the closure earlier this month on its website, telling customers it had spent the last five years fighting to keep the business afloat.
“We have been fighting for this beloved shop for the last 5 years and fighting to keep it afloat,” the announcement read, in all-caps. “However we have exhausted all possible solutions and have run out of time. As much as it pains us our only option left is to walk away.”
The store, located at 1004 Route 112, thanked its longtime customers for their loyalty over the decades.
“It’s been a pleasure fitting you and your family’s up every winter to make sure you all had the most fun on the slopes,” the announcement read. “We will certainly miss all of you.”
Customers who had skis left at the shop for tune-ups or repairs were told they had until June 19 to pick them up.
Opened in 1982

Since opening in 1982, Snow Shed had served as a one-stop shop for Long Islanders heading to the slopes, selling and renting skis, snowboards and cross-country equipment, along with bindings, boots, winter outerwear and thermal layers. The shop also offered full-service maintenance, including tune-ups, hot waxes, stone grinds, base repairs and binding mountings.
Ahead of its closure, Snow Shed held a going-out-of-business sale, discounting merchandise storewide between 40 and 70 percent. A for-sale sign now hangs outside the building.
