Staller Center announces its fall lineup of performances in Stony Brook

Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts has announced its performance lineup for the fall — and its filled with a variety of acts.

From late September and into December, those shows will feature singers, dancers, jazz musicians, Broadway actors and more. Scroll down to see the full lineup from the Staller Center.

The season starts off on Sep. 29, with An Evening with Pat Metheny, the jazz guitarist who has won twenty Grammy Awards in twelve categories.  In 2018, Pat Metheny was named NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The second show comes directly from Spain in Compania Flamenca with Eduardo Guerrero on Oct. 13, with the best of flamenco on the Main Stage. The swirling costumes and passionate choreography of this outstanding troupe promises to deliver a very special evening out.

Starry Nights features the stars of the Department of Music with artistic director and cellist, Colin Carr, creating programs unique to Staller Center. On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Starry Nights includes star violinists Philip Setzer and Arnaud Sussmann, percussionist Eduardo Leandro, and Colin Carr. The program features the Mendelssohn Octet, Beethoven Piano Trio (Archduke)  and Les Guetteurs de sons, a percussion piece by Georges Aperghis.

Megan Hilty, known for her roles as Glinda in Wicked, Ivy Lynn on NBC’s “Smash,” and televisions “The Good Wife” and “Desperate Housewives,” among others, will sing musical theater favorites and well-loved standards on Oct. 20.

Celebrity Autobiography ran for three sold-out years in New York City, and now comes to Staller Center on Saturday, Oct. 17. Actors will read from the memoirs of celebrities, choosing hilarious, remarkable passages. Celebrity Autobiography won the 2009 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. It’s expected to see out fast since it’s being performed in the intimate Staller Center Recital Hall. The cast will be announced at stallercenter.com.

A special musical treat comes to the Main Stage on Friday, Nov. 9 with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, welcoming two innovative artists, Ksenija Sidorova, accordion and Avi Avital, mandolin. These trailblazing musicians are reinventing these time-honored instruments.

Peridance Contemporary Dance Company on Nov. 17 promises an illustrious performance that has been seen around the world. Peridance is known for their brilliant choreography with dancers from U.S., Canada, Brazil, Italy, Japan and Korea.

The acclaimed Emerson String Quartet performs on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in a program that includes music by Shostakovich and Dvorak. Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violins; Lawrence Dutton, viola; and Paul Watkins, cello, make up the award-winning quartet.

For the holidays, see South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir in “A Tribute to Nelson Mandela and a Holiday Celebration” on December 8. Their rich harmonies and holiday soul promise to be an uplifting experience.
