The Stony Brook Film Festival turns 30 this summer — here’s what to know

|

What started as a low-key summer campus event in 1995 is now one of Long Island’s premiere arts traditions.

The Stony Brook Film Festival returns this July to celebrate its 30th anniversary with 10 nights of bold, independent cinema at the Staller Center for the Arts, according to an announcement issued today, Monday.

From July 17 through July 26, film lovers will get exclusive access to 36 powerful new shorts, dramas, thrillers and comedies—many of them world premieres or U.S. debuts that can’t be seen anywhere else, not even online.

“This festival has really become something special for the community,” Alan Inkles, the festival’s founder and Staller Center director, has said in past interviews with Greater Long Island. “It’s always been about discovering those hard-to-find films and giving people something they won’t get from a streaming service.”

The festival screens all films live and in-theater on Stony Brook’s massive main stage, drawing filmmakers and fans from around the globe.

Early bird passes are on sale now

For those looking to catch this summer’s biggest indies before anyone else, Early Bird Passes are now available at discounted prices through June 9.

Pass options include:

  • VIP Gold Pass – best perks and full access
  • Regular Pass
  • Flex Pass – good for any five days of the festival

All passholders get priority seating, filmmaker Q&As, eligibility to vote in the Audience Choice Awards, and discounts at local partner restaurants and businesses, according to Staller Center.

Each pass level comes with its own set of perks, including a commemorative gift.

Visit the Stony Brook Film Festival website for more information, and to secure tickets.

“This year’s lineup is one of our best yet,” organizers promise.
