Town urges dog foster/adoption applications ahead of shelter reopening

|

The Town of Brookhaven is urging people who have had their priorities turned upside down due to the coronavirus pandemic to once again consider fostering or adopting medium to large mixed-breed dogs by applying before the town’s animal shelter reopens on April 1.

The town said in a release that some dogs require a single pet household, and some have behavioral issues such as anxiety, guarding of food, toys or space, stranger reactivity, or some barrier reactivity and will require a very specific type of home. Others fine with other dogs.

If you’re interested, complete the Brookhaven Animal Shelter’s online “Matchmaker” application and a member of the animal shelter staff will be in touch with you, the town said.

All potential fosters/adopters will be required to make an appointment to visit the shelter for a “meet and greet” along with any other members and/or dogs that live in the household, as well as provide proof of homeownership or written landlord/homeowner approval.

Although the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is closed to the public until April 1, anyone interested in adoption, foster care and questions on redemption are asked to call during business hours at (631) 451-6950, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Separately, Brookhaven officials reminded residents that no dogs are allowed in town parks and facilities at any time for the safety of other residents as well as for sanitary reasons. Bringing a domestic pet into a Brookhaven park is a violation of town code and is punishable by a fine.
