What to know for Lindenhurst’s first-ever New Year’s Eve ball drop

|

The new year will mark a 100 years since Lindenhurst Village was officially incorporated.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, the Village of Lindenhurst and the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce have something special in the works.

For the first time in village history, Lindenhurst will host a ball dropping ceremony to ring in the new year.

They’re calling it the Centennial Ball Drop.

“We hope it will bring families together in the downtown to honor our history and support our local businesses,” said Lindenhurst Village trustee RJ Renna. He added more events are also in the works to celebrate the village’s 100 years.

The 3×3-foot ball — which was made by a local business in Copiague — will be dropped at Village Square on Wellwood Avenue on Dec. 31. It will be hoisted about 100-feet in the air by the Lindenhurst Fire Department.

According to Newsday, the night will feature live music from Top 40 cover band The Good Life, as well as street vendors serving up popcorn and hot pretzels. Noisemakers and 100th anniversary hats will be passed around during the celebration.

The festivities will begin at 7 p.m., with the ball making its descent at 9 p.m. A firework show by Grucci will follow the ball drop.

The event is rain or shine.

The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures in the 50s, low wind and a 60% chance of precipitation tonight.
