A 29-year-old Smithtown manufacturing engineer, robotics adviser and Eagle Scout has been identified as the victim killed in Monday night’s fiery crash on the Northern State Parkway in Smithtown.
New York State Police said Salvatore Sparacino IV was driving a 2010 Volkswagen Eos westbound near Exit 46 at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday when the car left the roadway, crashed and split in half. Troopers said Sparacino was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that unsafe speed and erratic operation contributed to the crash, authorities said.
Sparacino worked as a lead manufacturing engineer at BH Aircraft Co. Inc. in Ronkonkoma, according to his LinkedIn profile. Since 2022, he had also worked part-time as a robotics adviser for the Hauppauge Union Free School District, where he graduated high school.
Salvatore was an Eagle Scout in High School
A graduate of Hofstra University, Sparacino earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Hauppauge’s Troop 343. In a 2013 community profile recognizing the achievement, Sparacino was described as one of the troop’s youngest Eagle Scout and was noted for his interest in robotics, engineering and science programs.
The investigation into Monday night’s wreck remains ongoing, state police said.
